Format Notes

In individual races with distances 200m or below, swimmers will be split into heats, with the top 16 times regardless of heat advancing to the semifinals. Those 16 will advance to semifinals, where the top 8 times regardless of heat will advance to the finals. Again, at no point does winning your heat confer an advantage, the top times will simply advance.

In individual races with distances 400m or above, as well as relays, there are no semifinals. Thus, the top 8 times regardless of heat will advance directly to the final.

Athlete Bios

Nikola Acin, Serbia (2022-2023): Nikola Acin transferred to Michigan for his fifth year after spending most of his collegiate career at Purdue. He is a second time Olympian, having competed in Tokyo in the 4x100 free relay. He will join the Serbian team in Paris for the same event. At Purdue, he was a five time individual Big Ten Champion.

Yousuf Al-Matrooshi, UAE (2022-present): Yousuf Al-Matrooshi is a current member of the Wolverine swim team who is competing at his second Olympics. In Tokyo, he swam the 100 free, and will compete in the same event in Paris. He also competed in this event, as well as the 50 free, at the most recent World Championships. His Michigan career has not yet yielded any Big Ten medals, though he did hit personal bests in several events at this years Big Ten Championship.

Felix Auböck, Austria (2016-2020): Felix Auböck (often “Auboeck” in Olympic publications) will be attending his third Olympics with Austria, having swam in Rio and Tokyo. In Rio he finished 25th in the men’s 400 free, and finished just off the medal stand with a 4th place finish in Toyko in the same event. In Toyko, he also finished 7th in both the 800 free and 1500 free, making the finals in all three events he participated in. In Paris, he will swim the 200, 400, and 800 free. His career at Michigan was bookended by the two Olympic appearances. While a Wolverine he won the 2019 individual national championship in the 1650 yard free, and he also won nine Big Ten individual titles, including a four-year sweep in the 500 yard free.

Stephanie Balduccini, Brazil (2023-present): Stephanie Balduccini is just finishing her freshman year at Michigan, but is somehow not an Olympic debutant. In Tokyo, she was part of Brazil’s 4x100 free relay team. In Paris, she will participate in the 4x100 and 4x200 free relays. The 4x200 team recently finished fourth at the World Championships, the best finish in Brazillian history. As a freshman Wolverine, Balduccini won bronze in the 200 free at the Big Ten Championships, and qualified for NCAA’s in the 100 and 200 free.

Gal Groumi, Israel (2021-present): Gal Groumi will be competing in his second Olympics, after competing in Toyko prior to his freshman season at Michigan. There, he competed in the 4x200 free relay and the 200 IM, where he finished 30th. This year, he will compete individually in the 100m butterfly, as well as in several relays. She is the reigning world champion in the 200 free, having won at the World Aquatics Championships, where she also earned silver in the 100 free and bronze in the 100 breast. Haughey’s Michigan career included fifteen individual Big Ten Titles, with a four-year sweep in the 200 free.

She will be joined on both teams by fellow Wolverine Siobhan Haughey. She competed in both relays as well as the 100m fly at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships. Kan earned bronze at the most recent Big Ten Championships in the 100 fly.

Maggie MacNeil, Canada (2019-2022): Maggie MacNeil was one of the breakout stars of the Tokyo Olympics, winning a gold medal in the 100m butterfly. She also won two relay medals for Canada, in the 4x100 free and swimming fly in the 4x100 relay, where Canada finished silver and bronze, respectively. At these games, she will swim the 100m fly and the 4x100 medley relay. MacNeil is one of the most highly decorated Michigan swimmers of all time, winning two NCAA individual championships and a staggering 17 Big Ten individual titles. She is a two time Big Ten Swimmer of the Year. After graduating from Michigan, she raced a fifth year at LSU, where she was SEC Swimmer of the Year and won an additional national title.
