Format Notes

The 12 teams were drawn into three groups of four, and will play a three match group stage. The top two teams from each group as well as the top two third-place teams will advance to the knockout stage. Quarterfinal matchups will depend on which third-place teams advance, but the winner of Canada’s Group A will face a third-place team in the quarters, and the runner up will play the runner up of Group B.

Athlete Bio

Jayde Riviere has been a regular presence on the Canadian women’s national soccer team since she was a freshman at Michigan, including her appearance on the gold medal-winning Canadian team in Tokyo during the summer before her senior year. At those Olympics, Canada upset the USWNT in the semifinal before defeating Sweden for gold, and Riviere was subbed on to hold down the backline during extra time. At Michigan, Riviere was an imposing presence on Michigan’s defense and helped the Wolverines to the 2021 Big Ten Tournament Championship and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance that year. Unfortunately, Riviere’s college career was cut short by injury, and she retired from college soccer early in her senior season. Riviere currently plays for Manchester United and made 19 appearances across all competitions last season, mostly as a substitute.

Canada is currently ranked #8 in the world and will be expected to make it out of their group. They will more likely than not need to pull off an “upset” of a team that is ranked slightly higher to win the quarterfinals, but if they were to win the group they might get lucky with seeding.
