Format Notes

The men’s and women’s tournaments have the same format. 12 teams are split into three groups of four, and each team plays three group stage games. The top two teams in each group as well as the two top third-placed teams will qualify for the quarterfinal. Quarterfinal seeding has an unusual format in which teams are split into pots based on ranking and drawn against lower-ranked teams. Teams in the same group cannot play in the quarter finals.

Player Bios

Syla Swords, Canada (2024-present): Syla Swords is an incoming freshman at Michigan. Despite her age she has been a mainstay on Canada’s senior roster for the bulk of this Olympic cycle, and was part of the Canada team that won bronze at the 2023 Women’s AmeriCup. At Michigan, she will be the highest ranked recruit in history, and along with Olivia Olson are the first two McDonald’s All-Americans in Michigan WBB history. Canada snuck into the Olympics, going just 1-2 at their qualifying tournament. Despite this, their #5 international ranking means they should get out of the group. A bronze medal is on the table but would probably be a slight overperformance.

Franz Wagner, Germany (2019-21): Franz Wagner is the other one. Franz was on a plane to the United States when John Beilein announced he was leaving, and Moe and Juwan were able to close the deal. Franz’s Wolverines made the Elite 8 in Howard’s first NCAA Tournament. While not quite as illustrious a Michigan career as his brother, Franz left Michigan with predictions that he would turn into the better pro and that has come to pass. Franz was drafted by the Magic and the Wagners, Caleb Houstan, and Jett Howard make four Wolverines on that roster.

Moe Wagner, Germany (2015-18): Do I really have to do one of these for Moe Wagner? An all-time great in Michigan basketball history, Moe led the Wolverines to two straight Big Ten Tournament titles and a National Championship game. He was drafted by the Lakers in 2018 and currently plays with his brother, Franz, on the Orlando Magic. The Wagners and Germany are the defending FIBA World Cup Champions, and will show up in Paris ranked #3 in FIBA rankings. They will be a heavy favorite to make it out of the group and push for a medal.
