Athlete Bios
Debem Amene, Nigeria (2020-24): Debem Amene will compete on the Nigerian men’s 4 x 400m relay team. Nigeria qualified for the event by finishing second in their heat at the 2024 World Athletics Relays in May, and ultimately finished eighth in the finals. Amene is the defending Big Ten Champion in the outdoor 400m, and has a career-best 12th place finish in that event at NCAA’s. This is Dubem’s first Olympic games, but he has competed for Nigeria at other major international meets.
Ben Flanagan, Canada (2013-2018): Ben Flanagan is a distance runner, who will race the 5000m in Paris. It is his first Olympics, and only his second senior-level international event, after the 2023 World Athletics Championships. At that event, he placed 23rd. At Michigan, Flanagan ran both track and cross country, winning two individual Big Ten Championships in the 10,000m. In 2018, Flanagan ended his Michigan career by winning a National Championship at 10,000m, outdoors.
Ayden Owens-Delerme, Puerto Rico (2020-21): Ayden Owens-Delerme is a decathlete who attended USC, Michigan, and Arkansas in that order. In his one year at Michigan he was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year, won the Big Ten Championship in Decathlon and Heptathlon, and finished 2nd and 3rd nationally in those two events, respectively. His career-best finish on the world stage is a fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Athletics Championships (he competed but did not finish in 2023). He is currently ranked #13 in the world in Decathlon, and qualified through meeting the Olympic standards.
Cindy Sember, Great Britain (2013-16): Cindy Sember is an Ypsilanti native who will run the 100m hurdles in Paris. This will be her third Olympics in this event; she finished fourth in Rio but was eliminated in the semifinal in Rio. At Michigan, she won three Big Ten outdoor championships in the 100m hurdles, as well as two indoor 60m hurdle championships. She was also on the 2016 team that swept the indoor and outdoor team Big Ten Championships. Her sister and fellow Wolverine, Tiffany Porter, has also competed at three Olympics, starting in London and joining Cindy in Rio and Tokyo. (Both Sember and Porter currently compete under their married names, but competed as Cindy and Tiffany Ofili at Michigan.)
Savannah Sutherland, Canada (2021-present): Savannah Sutherland is a current member of the Michigan Wolverines track and field team. This is her first Olympics, and she will run both the 400m hurdles and the 4 x 400m relay. She holds a number of school records, some of which double as Canadian records. With Flanagan, Canada is the only team sending multiple Wolverines in athletics. Sutherland is a four-time Big Ten Champion, and in 2023 won the individual National Championship in 400m hurdles. She finished 25th overall in 400mH at the most recent World Athletics Championships.
